Program Description

The Skills for Trades Program supports adults with suspected or diagnosed brain-based differences in reaching their learning and vocational goals.

This non-vocational program takes a unique approach to providing explicit instruction alongside executive functioning support.

Learners can acquire skills and strategies to overcome potential barriers to trades certification and gain the confidence to be successful.

We can support with:

  • Study Skills
  • Test-Taking Skills
  • Executive Functioning Skills
  • Trades Math Skills
  • Exploring learning tools and strategies

Depending on learning goals, the program length may be between 12 and 32 sessions.

Throughout the program and with instructor guidance, learners will explore a variety of strategies and assistive technologies to support their short- or long-term goals related to apprenticeship, trades training, or trades work.

As part of the comprehensive program (32 sessions), the learner and their instructor will collaboratively build a toolkit that includes their learning profile, strategies, and resources to help them beyond the program.

At the end of the program, the instructor will create a final report that can be shared externally with information about supporting the learner in learning and workplace success.

Frequently Asked Questions

Information about your participation is only shared with staff directly involved in your learning, unless you give written permission for us to share it with someone else (for example, a sponsor or employer).

Yes. We welcome English language learners and adapt instruction to support your comprehension and communication. While not all instructors speak multiple languages, they use clear language, visuals, and flexible strategies to help you succeed.

We understand that learning can be emotional, especially when you care deeply about your work. Our instructors are trained in neuroaffirming and trauma-informed practices, and will help you manage frustration in constructive ways, working with you to find strategies that support your success.

While occasional frustration is completely normal, repeated or abusive behaviour toward staff or other members of our community will not be tolerated. Our goal is to maintain a safe and respectful learning environment for everyone. If challenges continue, we will meet with you to discuss support, boundaries, and next steps to ensure sessions remain productive and positive.

Yes. Many learners come to us feeling uncertain or discouraged. Our one-to-one sessions offer a supportive and non-judgmental space where you can build confidence in your skills, knowledge, and self-advocacy before returning to the job site or classroom.

Our sessions focus on the academic and cognitive aspects of trades success, such as math, reading, writing exams, and understanding trade-related concepts. While we do not offer hands-on practice, we will help you connect what you learn in class to your real-world work experience.

Many learners need more than one attempt at the Red Seal exam—it is completely normal. Your instructor can help you review your results, identify skill gaps, and create a targeted plan for your next attempt.

Our instructors are experienced educators who specialize in helping you learn, study, and apply knowledge effectively. While they may not all come from a trades background, our Program Manager has worked in trades, and we also have a Trades Consultant who helps ensure the program reflects real-world trade experiences. Instructors receive specialized training and resources to understand the context of different trades, so lessons are relevant and practical. They will also work closely with you to connect learning directly to your trade and on-the-job experiences.

No, the Red Seal exam must be written at an official government-approved testing center. However, the Skills for Trades program will help you prepare thoroughly, so you feel confident and ready when you take your exam.

While private tutoring primarily focuses on content review, the Skills for Trades Program is specifically designed for pre-apprentices, apprentices, and trades qualifiers. It combines essential academic skills (such as math, reading, and test-taking strategies) with real-world trades context and neuroaffirming instructional approaches. Our instructors are experienced in supporting diverse learners, ensuring that sessions build both skill and confidence.

The Skills for Trades Program is a one-to-one program, which means you will work directly with your instructor, who will tailor each session to your learning style, pace, and goals.

A sincere thank you to our founding financial and in-kind supporters of this important program.

For Employers

Why Skills for Trades?

Critical labour shortage

Canada is facing a critical labour shortage in skilled trades, despite a record number of apprentices entering training. Tens of thousands of new skilled trade workers are needed in the coming years to sustain Canada’s infrastructure, manufacturing, and food systems.

Without proactive measures, these labour shortages will lead to greater economic strain. Many capable individuals, especially neurodivergent workers and temporary foreign workers with literacy challenges, are falling through the cracks due to a lack of educational support and workplace accommodations.

Neurodivergent individuals are the solution

Neurodivergent individuals are the solution to the current skilled labour shortage.

By empowering underrepresented learners with practical, individualized support to help them succeed, Skills for Trades addresses the labour shortage and urgent demands in key industries building a robust, inclusive workforce.

Skills for Trades learners receive specialized training to develop key educational and workplace skills, including communication, problem-solving, organization, and resilience under pressure. They arrive on the job with confidence and strategies needed to contribute, adapt, and succeed.
