Why take the KTEA-3?

Results from the KTEA-3 can be valuable to parents and guardians who:

  • Want more insight into their child’s academic progress and/or are considering further intervention
  • Feel their school isn’t providing enough information on their child’s learning
  • Are deciding whether to pursue a psychoeducational assessment (“psych-ed”)

The KTEA-3 can also help homeschool families who want a snapshot of how their kids are doing academically. And for families advocating for accommodations, the KTEA-3 can be a useful and supportive tool.

About the KTEA-3

The Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement, third edition (KTEA-3) is a Level B academic assessment.

The results provide detailed information about your child’s learning profile in areas such as reading, written expression, and mathematics, highlighting strengths and areas for growth.

Level B assessments are standardized assessments, but the KTEA-3 does not diagnose learning differences such as dyslexia.

Scheduling and Fees

The KTEA-3 assessment timing is dependent on each learner. Assessments are booked for two hours but may take as little as one hour to three hours to complete. Guardians are encouraged to stay in the area or our lobby.

Please note that the KTEA-3 is not a substitute for a formal psycho-educational assessment, as it does not assess cognitive performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Studying for the KTEA-3 is not required.

Assessments take place during the day to minimize cognitive fatigue. We recommend a slow morning with a good meal before you come, and a fun treat afterward!

At Lightwell Learning, we do informal assessments in all our programs. These assessments allow us to better understand a learner’s needs, build rapport, and help us monitor progress by providing baseline data.

These assessments are not generally shared with your school team. A KTEA-3 is a great choice for a formal assessment to share with your school team.

Ask your case manager for more information on assessments.

The KTEA-3 can help if you want a clearer picture of where your child is in their learning, or if you are deciding whether to get a psychoeducational assessment.

The Dyslexia Index indicates whether an individual is at low, medium, or high risk of having dyslexia. But it does not diagnose dyslexia.

No, the KTEA-3 is not a psychoeducational assessment.

While we don’t offer diagnostic psychoeducational (Level C) assessments at Lightwell, we have referral relationships with UBC and SFU. At this time, this is only available to a small number of current Lightwell learners. Learners and families should contact their case manager for more information.

The KTEA-3 can be administered to anyone aged 4 to 25.
